Who knew that the slippery brown, rock-covering organisms along shores would be a greener fuel alternative. Studies have confirmed that algae contain oil that can be turned into diesel fuel.
Solazyme Inc., producer of algae-derived diesel, announced earlier this week that its algae-derived diesel does meet the American Society for Testing and Materials specification for diesel fuel, .
Algea-produced diesel is the greenest biofuel available, which provides a means for recycling carbon-dioxide waste produced from fossil fuel combustion. Algae biodiesel is also fuel efficient, outperforming plant crop biodiesel by 10 times, and 100 times as efficient than soy biodiesel.
Algae biodiesel is a cleaner fuel in that it re-uses carbon dioxide produced from power plants, a new technology that will reduce emissions from power plants while providing a clean-burning alternative for the transportation sector.
